Position Summary:

The role of the Merchandise Margin Analyst is to participate in the merchandise planning and forecast process, prepare reporting and analysis of gross margin and inventory, and support the accurate execution of merchandise pricing and signing.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

The major responsibilities include:


  • Develop / maintain reporting and analyses to identify issues and opportunities impacting gross margin
  • Prepare ad hoc management reports, analyses and presentations upon request
  • Build accurate seasonal store gross margin budgets
  • Support and develop accurate forecasts of sales, markdowns and gross margin
  • Assist merchant organization by providing analysis and explanation of margin and inventory performance
  • Contribute to the preparation of materials for Board of Directors meetings
  • Actively participate in developing and implementing process enhancements
  • Conduct Store visits to obtain feedback, improve processes, and train – as required
  • Partner with the MIS organization to better resolve system issues and implement improvements / upgrades
  • Troubleshoot and provide daily operational support to Merchant and Store organizations
  • Actively support the control of POS Overrides and Coupon compliance
  • Represent the PAO in meetings as needed
  • Cover responsibilities of other PAO Analysts in their absence
  • Follow any job-related instructions requested by supervisor or management

Internal Relationships:

Business partners are located throughout the organization; primary contacts are in the Merchant, Planning and Allocation, Stores, Divisions, Sales Promotion, Controllers, Treasury, Internal Audit, Legal, and MIS departments


Position Requirements

Education & Experience

Four year degree, preferably in Finance, Business or Accounting

At least two years of Retail experience



Ability to operate PC.

Ability to manipulate computer keyboard.

Ability to operate and communicate using telephone.

Ability to maintain files.

Ability to open/effectively route/distribute mail and paperwork

Ability to perform some lifting as required.

Ability to perform mathematical calculations and/or balance computations.

Ability to analyze/evaluate invoice, statistical or accounting data.

Ability to understand and utilize technical charts (flow charts, schematics, flowcharts, drawings, etc).

Ability to understand policies/procedures and communicate them.

Ability to formulate/administer budgets and analyze related reports.

Ability to effectively communicate.

Ability to make presentations in an audience setting.

Ability to analyze resumes/applications for screening and hiring purposes.

Ability to coach associates in regard to professional development.

Ability to observe employee performance and communicate directions to them.
