Position Summary:
The Director, Technical Design is a leadership position responsible for ensuring timely development and commercialization of products for each brand. This position acts as point person in communication of all open issues between cross functional teams including the brand manager, designer, sourcing partners, and buyer. This role requires the individual to be a strategic leader who is an effective listener and communicator, who is transparent and leads with integrity and humility. The individual in this position must be an out of the box thinker who understands how to make calculated decisions for the product in partnership with the VP of technical design, suppliers and cross functional teams, and in accordance with the vision for the brand.   

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
  • Partner with the VP of technical design on technical strategies, team growth, cross functional communication and building strong relationships with suppliers.
  • Lead the technical design function to support the pre-production process along with the integration of quality assurance.
  • Attend fit sessions in collaboration with like-level peer groups in brand management and design.  Directs the technical designer on commercial fit and matching fit intent with buy intent.
  • Collaborate with the brand manager and buying team to understand buy size and importance of each item to help integrate fit with design and buy intent.
  • Collaborate with senior technical designers to help manage fit models and monitor model size to maintain standard measurements.
  • Ensure that the specifications, fit, and quality of a product are made to each brand’s standards.
  • Manage store visits with senior technical designers to evaluate production against approved fits.
  • Partner with the senior technical designers and suppliers to anticipate and resolve quality issues in the garment construction process.
  • Research and evaluate market seasonally for fit, construction, and quality to provide direction to technical team.
  • Stay up to date with industry developments, i.e. construction, materials, new techniques, processing, etc.
  • Communicate with various industry partners and leaders within Belk to help provide necessary technical guidance to the technical design team and cross functional teams to help achieve the garment’s fit and function.
  • Continually evaluate and streamline technical design systems and processes for increased efficiency.

Required Education & Experience:

  • BA, BS in Fashion Design, Technical Design, or related program
  • 10+ years of experience in Technical Design and Management
  • Expertise in flat pattern, pattern manipulation, draping and grading knowledge.
  • Experience in conducting fit sessions on live model and mannequins.
  • Proficient with web based product development programs, Adobe Illustrator, Windows applications, Pattern Making Software

Reports Directly to:  VP of Technical Design

Supervises: Technical Designer and/or Sr. Technical Designer as business need dictates.
